butawa
Butawa

This coffee comes from eastern Uganda, on the slopes of Mount Elgon, near the town of Butawa, where hundreds of smallholder farmers cultivate coffee at elevations between 1,800 and 2,200 metres. After harvest, the cherries are delivered to a central washing station operated by The Coffee Gardens. There, they are first depulped and then fermented in water for around 40 hours, allowing the flavours to develop greater depth and intensity. The coffee is then washed and slowly dried on traditional African raised beds.At the end of the process, the coffee cherry pulp is composted and returned to the farms, where it is used as a natural fertiliser.

My first coffee from Uganda. Ugandan coffees have always held a special place for me - not only because of their flavour profile, but also because of their origin. Although Uganda is not among the world's largest coffee-producing countries, it shouldn't be overlooked, as it offers excellent growing conditions.
This time I chose a coffee with a very intense character, bringing vibrant African fruit notes that remind me of freshly pressed juice.
I primarily recommend it for espresso, but as is often the case with coffees in this category, it's well worth trying as a filter brew too.
